It has to be greta garbo; what a woman
Ah, it’s a close tie between Clara Bow and Louise Brooks but I think I’d choose Clara because as a friend pointed out, she had the perfect lips for lipstick.
‘The most sensational woman anyone ever saw’ according to Ernest Hemingway…. My 1920s hero has to be Josephine Baker!!
It’s got to be Brigitte Helm! Not only was she in the most iconic film of the 1920s (Metropolis, what else?!) but she has the definitive 1920s look. A daring, sexy, mix of vamp and innocent-doe-eyes with that perfectly set hair and captivating stare? How could you think of anyone else?!
Phenomenal woman, and actress; undoubtedly my style hero and icon of the 1920s generally!
- agree about Metropolis, but…would have to go for the Robot actually, the “dark and destructive Fembot’ version of Maria. Looks pretty capable of multi-tasking, progenitor of mondern Terminator/Terminatrix – capable of putting Arnie through a brick wall too. For that, she just pips Louise Brooks I think, though Brooks wins the battle of the hairdo.
It would have to be Coco Chanel. She liberated woman from the restraints of the “corseted silhouette” and created a “Casual Chic” I’m all for that !
Mine would have to be Louise Brooks, the stunningly beautiful lady ‘with the dutch black boy haircut’
Although I also LOVE Louise Brooks, the woman that chimes with me most is Lee Miller. Her personal style meant she went from being a model in the 1920′s to war photographer to Sussex lady and always looked stylish and effortless in her clothes.
It has to be Josephine Baker. She was so ahead her time and captivated everyone with her amazing style.
There’s so many that I take inspiration from, but if I have to narrow it down, I’d have to say my male inspiration is the one and only Charlie Chaplin – Iconic and I’m certain will be remembered still long after I’m gone (I’m 19)
Woman wise it just HAS to be Coco Chanel, she MADE fashion in my opinion, she just channels elegance and feminism, she’s one of the reasons I went into the fashion industry myself!! Plus most of my favourite stars are fans, so that says something!
Hollywood actress Gilda Grey had a natural elegance and beauty. The dance dresses she wore were so fabulous. Quite frankly being credited with inventing the Shimmy is a pretty good reason to be recognised as an inspirational style icon!
For me, it’s Marlene Dietrich. Apart from the fact I share my birthday with her, I think she had great style; certainly knew how to rock the androgynous look, but looked equally beautiful in 1920s glamour. And those eyes…
